I find these tiny black flies dead in my house near floor boards and window sills. I live in Florida and Windows are closed. We keep our sliders closed most of the time. How do I get rid of them. I’ve only been bitten once otherwise they are just a nuisance and I have to move furniture to clean up their bodies.
To keep them out of crevices, put a thin line of
Dawn dishwashing liquid just inside the window’s seams, and crevices. They will not crawl through it, and it will not harm other creatures in the environment, especially endangered frogs that sometimes like the same places. Just a note: it also keeps the frogs out of those spaces. Never use toxins, as it kills off the good elements in your environment, that keep worse pests away from you.
very small flys almost invisible, fly in a ziz zag pattern and are very fast. bite irritates but doesn’t swell. love to fly in ears or nose. seem to like the lamp light but are day time pests as well. What are they? How do they bread? what do I do to get rid of them?
I am seriously allergic to bites from gnats and no-see-ums which are both members of the biting fly family which unfortunately number in the hundreds when it comes to the variety. There has been a misconception that these biting flies die off in the winter, but recent studies have found that they live throughout the winter under the bark of trees. Gnats seen around fruit bowls can be eliminated by luring them into a solution of cider vinegar. Gnats that are visible around house plants or that hover around the kitchen or bathroom drains are fungus gnats. Biting gnats are interested in just one thing — blood. From the moment the females hatch, their sole purpose in life is to find a supply of blood so they can procreate. What makes their bites problematic to humans is that the bites often become infected due to the transfer of bacteria that occurs after biting a dead or wounded animal. In addition to becoming more active at dusk and dawn, members of the biting fly family go into high gear for hours before a rain storm. I’ve read that the scent of vanilla or of citrus will repel them, but you can’t prove it by me. Extra potent DEET products haven’t worked for me either. What does keep them at bay is menthol or eucalyptus scented products like Bengay, Mentholated Gold Bond, and Vick’s Vapo Rub — but only as long as the scent is strong. I find I have to reapply them often which is tedious and costly. Hope this helps some of you. If you have questions, feel free to email me. Take care, Maryann
